THE SUPPLY OF REGISTERED PUPPIES TO PET SHOPS

In the last couple of years, it has become more common to see the unfortunate sight of registered puppies in petshop display windows in Australia.

It was against the code of ethics of all A.N.K.C.Councils for their members to sell to petshops. Most breeders supported this rule, and many of us are wondering now, how a minority group, could have such a strong say in what the rules for the majority are.

I, for one, am against petshops, making a living out of live animals.

The conditions in which the animals are kept are clean, but very small. The puppies are developing quickly and being sold through a petstore, doesn't give them enough stimulus to continue to learn. They are also living in very stressful conditions, which will open the way for low resistance born illness and disease to spread.

Most puppies bought through a petshop, are of inferior quality. They do not come with a guarantee, that most breeders offer all buyers.

Most animals bought through a petshop, are bought on a whim and for emotional reasons, many find their way into animal refuges, city pounds and worse, still, on the street to fend for themselves, once their cute puppy stage is over.

The main aim for a breeder selling puppies through a petshop, is for a quick turnover of their 'merchandise' and they do not have to shoulder the responsiblity, of the puppies that they have bred.

The buyer, when buying from a petshop, is usually given a very restricted and tight guarantee. I have heard of one case of a deaf GSD, unregistered, being bought from a petshop. The owner found out at 11 weeks old, that the puppy was deaf. They had many heated discussions over the phone, to the point of buyer threatening to sue.

The petshop gave in and demanded that the buyer have the puppy put to sleep, before they would give them a refund. Unfortunately, for the puppy, the buyer, took the later.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Write to your state Canine Control Council and lodge your objection.
PETSHOPS pay them a visit and let them know how you feel about them selling live animals, and until they stop this practice, you refuse to buy anything from the store.
SUPPORT ONLY registered breeders, that don't support the petshop trade.
TELL YOUR FRIENDS also of this cruel practice and ask them to join in protest.

We can do so much, and  one  voice can turn into hundreds.
